Day 25: Discovering Salzburg

 Day 25 - Discovering Salzburg

Aaron started today with his longest run on this trip, over eight miles throughout the city of Salzburg.  The boys enjoyed breakfast and a few rounds of Uno, while I carried on my Nespresso coffee and devotional morning routine in my newest location, a chair near an open, breezy window which overlooks downtown Salzburg.

We gathered ourselves to head out and immediately discovered a park, where the boys played for a bit.  A few things have kept us sane on this trip, parks being one of them.  We let the boys play for a while as we determined our plan for the day.  Having approached this city with far less research than others, I’ve booked the next two days with activities, but this day is free.  We decided to head into the Alstadt to discover the town and head up to the fortress.

We’ve gone a few days without ice cream (having taken it away on more than one occasion as our only weapon of parenthood!) so we designed a photo scavenger hunt with two scoops of ice cream as a reward.  The boys brought their iPods to take pictures of the following as we ventured through the city:

  • Mozart’s birthplace

  • The Mozart bridge

  • The Mozart Statue

  • An outdoor food vendor

  • Street Musicians

  • A Cathedral

  • An Austrian Souvenir

  • A fountain

  • A local Austrian in full attire (think leather shorts and suspenders!)

  • And… an up close photo while at the Fortress

This activity kept them mostly engaged while we enjoyed the sites, and especially the sounds, of the city. Several times we stopped to admire local musicians, a group of violinists blowing us away near the university.

We took the funicular up to the Fortress to the highest views and looked over the breathtaking landscape of the Austrian Alps and the downtown Alstadt. On our way back from the fortress, the boys discovered a human-sized chess game, and stopped to play for a bit. They got pretty annoyed when a local German man kept yelling at them, scolding them for making the wrong moves. Shortly thereafter, they abandoned the game and we continued our search for their ice cream.

We settled on a spot over the river, and the boys enjoyed their sundaes. Worn out from walking, we decided to make do with what we have back at the flat for dinner, and I let the boys play in the park for a while while I read.
