Day 21 - Final day in Grindelwald

Day 20 - Final day in Grindelwald

Our final day in Switzerland was intended to include a boat ride on Lake Thun, with a visit to the village of Thun. Unfortunately, we woke up to find it raining, our first bad weather day in twenty days. With projections of rain all day, and tired feet and bodies, we were happy to have a day of rest.

Aaron has managed to do very little work while abroad, only checking in with his team on urgent matters. Our slower start to the morning allowed him some quality work time, while I took the boys into Grindelwald to do some shopping. In spite of the rain, we had a great time just checking out the stores.  We’ve lived in Grindelwald, but barely spent time here with our many travels to hike and visit other towns.  Today was a great day to discover the local vibe. The boys grabbed a donut and I sat down for a coffee while we watched outside the window as a helicopter rescued a paraglider from the rain. The boys raced down the street to watch as he lowered his rope and hoisted the individual up to safety.  With hundreds of paragliders going over the mountain each day, it was no surprise one got stuck due to weather.

Later in the day, the rain subsided a bit and Aaron joined us in town as the boys played mini golf and we grabbed a drink at Avocado Bar. Once they finished, we played a family round of pingpong at the bar, and grabbed some groceries to make a fondu dinner.

Switzerland is so expensive, that we’ve eaten only lunch when we’re out and about, and dined in for breakfast and dinner.  I bought emmentaler and Gruyère cheese, mushrooms, potatoes and bread, for a traditional fondue. Our VRBO chalet is so well outfitted with all fondue equipment, we had everything we needed for a spectacular meal. Unfortunately, I cut myself while preparing the meal, and its the worst cut I’ve experienced while cooking. It took almost an hour to get the bleeding to stop, and after a quick text to my sister-in-law Ashley, I held my hand above my heart, used some ice, and the crisis was averted. Thankfully, Aaron kept th meal running, and we all enjoyed some great fondue.
