Day 3: Visiting the White Village of Frigiliana and the nearby beach town of Nerja
Day 3: Visiting Frigiliana and Nerja
Today, we ventured to a white village just twenty minutes from La Herradura called Frigiiliana. It took us a minute to get our bearings, with parking hard to find and difficult to navigate. Once we parked, we acended a steep staircase into the village, wandering the stone streets lined with blue, purple and turquoise doors and flower pots. We stopped by the Iglesia de San Antonio, built in 1676. We ate lunch at La Bodeguilla and learned that the Spanish interpretation of a Shrimp Cocktail is quite different from ours; covered in a thick pink sauce. Not our favorite! But the Spanish omelette continues to be a hit since our first stop in Madrid.
We then ventured to Nejra, a beach town on the coast just ten minutes from Frigiliana, and found ourselves two chair rentals on the playa. The boys were stunned by their first experience with nude bathers. Colton exclaimed, “Mom, I just have no idea why anyone would want to do that!” They giggled from time to time, but for the most part they ignored the sight of women without bathing suits.
We enjoyed our first gelato at a little shop on the beach, and followed up our time in the sun with a nice early dinner while watching the French Open. Nadal, a Spanish native, advanced to the finals after his opponent to injured himself during the match, and we were sad to see the match come to an end.
So far our favorite food discoveries are the large salads with hard boiled egg, corn and hearts of palm, Pizza con Prochuitto, and a white wine called Rioja Blanco, very easy to drink and light.
